I recommend using only dry Q-tips or other dry materials to clean the striker and extractor slide cavities. You don't want even the slightest wet spot in your attack channel. Regardless of how you clean the remaining parts, dry them completely with a dry patch before reassembling.
The really dirty components that require extra attention are the extractor (especially the blade edge/groove), the heater and the ejector. I use Rem Oil wipes or a Rem Oil moistened patch to dig deep into these areas with my nails to completely remove the gunk residue.

There is no way to know when a component will fail in any firearm. Therefore, liability requires replacing components at cycle count intervals. Better to replace parts before you believe you need them!
Most Glock parts are very inexpensive, so I recommend always having a few on hand for each Glock you own. That way, when you fail—and if you do a lot of work, you will fail—you can put in a new replacement without having to order it and wait for it to arrive.
There are several components in a Glock pistol that wear out faster than others and require regular replacement. These include an endless spring assembly, a spring retainer, a slide lock spring, and a magazine retainer spring.
The recoil springs are the backbone of the pistol. There are many considerations and preferences as to when to replace the return spring, a) to avoid wheelie problems and b) to avoid breaking the lock block. I recommend replacing the recoil spring every 3000-5000 cycles for the .40 cal and .357 Sig. For .380, 9mm, 45 and 10mm I recommend changing every 5,000-10,000 rounds.

Many other non-OEM parts can work well on a Glock, but if you're concerned about reliability, I know there's no substitute for a Glock source. Here again the distance can vary. Springback kits usually cost between $7 and $20. You can also consider replacing the locking blocks for about $3 every 30,000-40,000 revisions.
With a forged trigger spring, the gun doesn't feel like a paperweight. I have never seen a broken trigger spring on Glocks. I read that the coil springs should be replaced every 10,000 cycles, so I did. Starting Spring Failure - I don't want to try it because it's around $2. It's cheap; especially when compared to life-threatening failure.
Do not write down a broken slide lock as it will come off the frame. The slide lock is the mechanism used to fire the Glock. The two tabs that stick out from either side of the frame are the edges of the slide lock. The most important sources are framed and sometimes exploded. Glock 19 Gen 4 broke after 31,000 rounds (I should have replaced it sooner!). I recommend replacing the slide lock spring every 10,000 cycles. These resources cost about $3.
A broken magazine spring means the pistol cannot retain the magazine. The Glock 19 Gen 4 magazine broke after 51,000 rounds. The spring included in the set does not need to be removed unless you are replacing or changing the magazine publication. I've never seen any info on how often these break, but you can't run a Glock. It costs about $3. I recommend replacing every 20,000 rounds.

I only mention this because it needs to be replaced, not necessarily due to wear and tear. I only bent the slide lever once, I think, on my first Glock pistol when the first section was cleaning. I read that it was a simple story.
